Pascagoula, Miss., July 20, 2018 – VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a company of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), today announced the successful delivery of Crowley Maritime Corporation’s (Crowley’s) new Commitment-Class ship M/V El Coquí, one of the world’s first Combination Container Roll-on/Roll off (ConRo) ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), from its Pascagoula facility in Mississippi.
El Coquí is the first of two Commitment-Class LNG-powered ConRo ships for Crowley’s shipping and logistics services between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. El Coquí, like her sister ship Taíno, meets U.S. Jones Act federal statute, and are able to transport up to 2,400 twenty-foot-equivalent container units (TEUs) and a mix of nearly 400 cars and larger vehicles in the enclosed, ventilated and weather-tight Ro/Ro decks.
El Coquí and sister ship, Taíno, are designed and equipped to carry containers, ranging from 20-foot standard to 53-foot by 102-inch-wide high-capacity units, with room for up to 300 refrigerated containers. The ship measures 219.5m long, 32.3m wide (beam), with a deep draft of 10m, and an approximate deadweight capacity of 26,500 metric tonnes. It is an indication of VT Halter Marine’s shipbuilding capabilities. The delivery of El Coquí sets a new standard for responsible shipping and provides a valuable domestic shipping service between the U.S. and Puerto Rico for Crowley.
“This delivery represents another milestone in our unwavering commitment to Puerto Rico and the Jones Act,” said Tom Crowley, chairman and CEO of Crowley. “We’ve dedicated a large part of our business to serving the supply chain needs of residents and businesses on the island and El Coquí is the latest chapter of history of commitment to Puerto Rico. We thank the men and women at Crowley, VT Halter Marine and other partners, who have dedicated themselves to designing and building El Coquí and Taíno. We know that without their expertise none of this would be possible.”
“The teams from Crowley and VT Halter Marine have worked tirelessly to overcome challenges and their efforts and spirit must be commended on today’s delivery of El Coquí to Crowley. We are proud to be a part of Crowley’s long standing legacy in transportation services, and the role El Coquí and soon-to-join sister vessel Taíno will play in shipping and logistics to San Juan,” said Rob Mullins, Chief Executive Officer of VT Halter Marine.
